DCA/Student Services Award Recipients - 2008

Elementary Counselor - Henrietta Gross
Henrietta Gross is an elementary guidance school counselor at Edison Park Elementary School. During her 30 year career, she has been a beacon of light and hope to the children that she serves.
She is responsible for initiating the Foster Grandparent Program at her school, ensuring that at-risk students are provided with mentoring experiences.
Middle School Counselor - Virginia Ruddy
Virginia Ruddy is a guidance counselor at Lamar Louise Curry Middle School. She is a proactive counselor who has brought programs and workshops to her school such as bullying prevention, effective communication skills, and internet safety. Ms. Ruddy always displays an optimistic attitude.
High School Counselor - Carmen Perez-Perez
Carmen Perez-Perez is the Student Services Chairperson at Miami Sunset Senior High School. She is a motivational leader and a model for proactive counseling, supportive of all counselors and not afraid to tackle any situation.
T.R.U.S.T. Specialist - Susan Curtiellas
Susan Curtiellas is the TRUST Specialist at Herbert A. Ammons Middle School and truly exemplifies the commitment and compassion which exemplify the role of the T.R.US.T. Specialist. She incorporates such programs for her students as Dade Partners, Volunteers, Summer Youth and Drop-Out programs.
Career Specialist - Alvaro Lourido
Mr. Lourido is the Career Specialist at Westland Hialeah Senior High School. He is in his thiry-fourth year with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He is very proud of having had the opportunity to utilize his knowledge and expertise to train new Career Specialists in the field and assist with their successful placement in school settings.
CAP Advisor - Elizabeth Whitby
Elizabeth Whitby is the CAP Advisor at MAST Academy where she is highly respected and trusted by all students with whom she works. Her background in counseling coupled with her extensive career in the business world has made her a versatile, flexible and resourceful member of the student services team at her school.
School Social Worker - Andrea Hamilton
Among her many accomplishments as a social worker, Ms. Hamilton garnered major parental support with her “Dawn To Dusk” informal home visits which provided a wealth of information about community resources, books, and vocational training for parents and students.
School Psychologist - Juliette Sefair-Montoya
Mrs. Juliette Sefair-Montoya is a school psychologist for Region I where she is an integral part of the School Support Teams. Her prior experiences have included her involvement at the University of Miami’s Mailman Center and the Head Start program.
Alternative E. Administrator - Claire C. Warrent
Ms. Warren became principal of the Young Women’s Academy at J.R.E. Lee in 2001 where she “hit the ground running” with her personal style and her ability to recognize the challenges faced by the students at her school. She has been instrumental in the establishment of the Girls Ad Hoc Committee with various community and business members interested in advocacy for at-risk girls.
Secondary Administrator - Miguel Veloso
Miguel Veloso demonstrates respect and reliance on the Student Services team at Miami Southridge Senior High School. He is always alert to student problems and goes to great efforts to ensure students welfare. His relationship with students is one of his greatest strengths. He recognized each student as an individual and accurately identifies methods of bring out the best they have to offer.
K-8 Educational Center Administrator - Dr. Lawrence Feldman
Dr. Lawrence Feldman, Principal of Deveon Aire K-8 Center is perceived by his staff as a phenomenal administrator. He previously worked as Region Director for Regions V and VI and served as President and President Elect of the Dade Association of School Administrators, serving as a keynote speaker at various conferences.
